Prerequisites

This course is designed to be accessible for all 12d Model users. To get the most out of this training, we recommend:

- Foundation Knowledge: Familiarity with rail terminology and rail design is advantageous, but not essential.

- Optional Prerequisites: Completing the Civil Design Basics course will give you a great head start.

Course Outline:

This course covers the end-to-end process of rail track alignment and design in 12d Model. You will master track centreline generation and best-fit regression alignments from surveyed rails, mainline and passing loop design, version control, track slew assessment, chainage equalities, structural clearance, and rail cant calculations. Additionally, you will learn to model complex physical assets, including rail formations, level crossings, turnouts, culverts, and 3D trimesh/polymesh elements for rails, sleepers and ballast.

Course Overview

In this course you will:

  • Master Super Alignment geometry by designing the mainline with the Intersection Point (IP) method. You will also build resilient geometries through computators for the passing loop and level crossing that automatically resolve when the mainline geometry is updated.
  • Analyse the spatial deviations between proposed alignments and existing centrelines. Learn to calculate precise lateral track slews, determine vertical lift requirements based on slew and cant adjustments, and generate rigorous engineering offset reports.
  • Compute precise track superelevation while determining design speeds and validating calculations against design requirements. Apply these calculations to generate physical rail strings that incorporate automatic gauge widening.
  • Design multi-layered earthworks by utilising Snippet Components and MTF Snippet Apply to generate rail formation, ballast, and sub-ballast capping layers.
  • Place multi-barrel culverts beneath the rail formation while utilising the redesign feature to handle skew angles, formation toe trimming, and barrel lengths. Modify formation batters to seamlessly accommodate culvert sets.
  • Create and position turnouts to configure and manage parametric turnout units. Learn to position them using placement nodes that remain dynamically anchored to the parent track geometry during alignment revisions.
  • Model 3D trimeshes/polymeshes for rails, sleepers, and ballast from snippets. Visualise rails, sleepers, and ballast in perspective and cross-section views to ensure spatial accuracy and model integrity.

Course Certificate: Certificate of Completion

The Certificate of Completion from the Civil and Surveying Institute is a professional certification granted to individuals who have successfully completed the Self-Paced Online Training course via our SPOT platform. To earn this certification, you must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher by completing all course requirements, including quizzes or tests. This indicates your familiarity with the course material and understanding of the field.

This certificate highlights your commitment to professionalism and ongoing learning, making it a valuable addition to your professional qualifications.
